Our Story
“Every journey has a beginning. Ours started in the most unexpected place.”
During a family visit to Canada, one of our founders, António Pinto, noticed a gentleman carefully comparing bottles of Portuguese wine. He introduced himself and recommended a few wines from the Douro Valley, explaining what made each one special.
The gentleman smiled, and that simple recommendation turned into a deep conversation. He told António that he had visited Portugal a few years earlier and had fallen in love with Porto, the people, the food, and the wine.
Then, he said something that stayed with us forever:
"I'd love to go back... but I don't know who I can trust to help me plan the trip from Canada."
That single sentence sparked an idea.
Later that day, António shared the conversation with Paulo Santos. Together, they realized that many Canadians dream of discovering Portugal but struggle to find people who truly understand both countries people who know Portugal as locals, but completely understand Canadian travelers.
That idea became Northern Roots Travel.
Today, our mission remains exactly the same: to help you experience the Portugal we proudly call home. Not only the famous places, but also the stories, traditions, flavors, and people that make Portugal truly unforgettable.
Because sometimes, the greatest journeys begin with a simple conversation.
Northern Roots Travel wasn't created in a boardroom. It was born from a conversation in the Portuguese wine aisle of a Canadian supermarket.
